The Darkness Between Stars
Languages of Lir
You have one language slot for every language listed when creating a normal D&D character. Each slot can be used to buy a spoken or written version of any of the languages listed below. You have to buy the spoken and written separately. Per normal rules a first level character cannot learn Abyssal or Supernal languages. Not all languages have a both a spoken and written form.
In Paragon Tier there are many themes and feats that give you more language slots. You each language it gives you is still one language slot. So if the text says you read/speak 4 languages you get 4 slots to pick written or spoken versions from the list. There are likely more languages now but very rare. You can get creative with this as you see fit. If you come across one of those ultra cheesy powers that grants All Languages or something .. consider yourself having 6 slots.
These rules are to simulate the illiterate nature of the original Dark Sun world. Books and scrolls do not exist except as ancient relics. Clay tablets are used for writing and even serve as scroll. Scroll stones crumble after usage. Paper and writing are making a big comeback but mostly in the churches and courts.
